About Open Calls Seattle
History / How it started
The first iteration of me collecting event information, dates, locations, vendor fees, etc etc etc. I love spreadsheets, but I learned that it wasn't something other people wanted to participate in editing or contributing to. I think I had WAY too many categories to fill in!
How it's going & the future
Slowly, I have been able to make this site and its information easier to access, more robust, and able to be filtered for your needs. I was proud to be able to budget enough to buy a domain name for added legitimacy to the project, as well as maintain it year after year. I have even been able to fund better updates to the website for navigational purposes and for finding opportunities. I hope this website grows more and more! I would like to allow feedback from - YOU - about specific events. How you felt about them, how you did, what you'd improve on, etc. All of this would be anonymous of course.
Why do this?
At my very first market, several people asked me, 'How do you find these'? I had no idea how to guide anyone, but I wanted to. So, I began to learn so that I could help others.
'Art accessibility', to me, isn't just about price. It's about the artists themselves being able to create the art without starving themselves, and for them and their audience to find each other. It's about sharing, community, building each other up, and helping them connect with others.
Without the artist, there is no art...which makes art not accessible.
Without the space to show work, artists and the audience can't connect... which makes art not accessible for anyone.
